Inside the Leslie Speaker Cabinet

Did you ever listen to the Beatles, Eric Clapton, SRV, David Gilmour and countless other guitar players playing through a Leslie speaker? You know that classic slow moving sort of chorus sound then speeding up to a bubbly vibrato. Those old Leslie speaker cabinets sound so good with a guitar. And why shouldn’t they? There is a tube amp inside, all mechanical moving parts (no modeling here) and the cabinet is made of beautiful wood. All the ingredients for a rich, organic sound.

Did you ever wonder how the darn thing works? Or what’s inside? My inqusitive mind always wanted to know so years ago I did the only natural thing…..I took one apart! Many of you probably will not have the luxury or the desire to take a Leslie speaker cabinet apart but are interested in how it works. I found a great article all about the technical workings of the Leslie speaker cabinet. It’s a bit long-winded and loaded with technical details but if you really want to know check it out.
