Joe Barden Engineering – Danny Gatton T-style Pickups
The video post I put up of Danny Gatton ripping it up got such a great response I thought I’d link you over to the review I did on the Joe Barden pickups Danny used. These pickups are excellent and while not sounding exactly like vintage Tele pickups they have many positive attributes especially for the modern player.
First of all they are humbucking so when you use some gain or overdrive pedals there is no hum. Second, they have more output than a vintage type pickup but do not sound like “hot” pickups and drive your amp too hard. Last, these pickups have a broader dynamic range which makes them very versatile. Just listen to Danny Gatton and you’ll hear them in action.

I couldn’t agree more. I modded my Hwy 1 tele w/ a set of Bardens and a Callaham Vintage compensated bridge. It took the guitar to a whole new level. One caveat…if you’re not confident in your playing, don’t go with the Bardens. They are merciless. If you make a mistake or have sloppy technique, the whole world will know. Having said that however, I’ll never take these bad boys off of my tele. They make me a better player.
Hi Mike and thanks for visiting 300guitars!!! I completely agree with what you said about the Barden pickups. You cannot hide at all so you really have to be on your game……really good point. Got any pics of your Teles with the Bardens? I’ll put them in the Gallery! -Billy
